本課程為日文系三年級必修課程。每週授課兩小時。教材採講義形式。
由於本課程之開設目的﹐乃為讓學生認識日本文學名著﹐是以教材均選擇已有定評之日本文學作品。上至古代﹐下至現代﹐可以作為教材之日本文學作品自不在少數。然而﹐三年級學生之閱讀能力有限﹐古典文學作品尤其難解﹐因此﹐教材之選擇是以已有定評的近代日本作家之代表作—亦即以詩歌、散文、童話、小說等體裁之近代文學作品為主,使學生理解,鑑賞日本文豪的文章表現、名作的作品特色、發生背景等等。時間若許可,或間能佐以中世、近世之隨筆、紀行文（遊記文學）之精華部分,俾使學生亦有接觸日本古典文學之機會。
評分方式：學期成績=期中考(30%)＋期末考(30%)+平時成績(40%)。


Reading in Japanese Literature Masterpieces

This course is a required course for Japanese majors, and also a two-hour class each Tuesday, 10-12 A.M. Texts: handouts.
This course is designed to help students understand Japanese literary masterpieces; therefore, the texts selected are all Japanese literary works that are already considered classics. Since the reading ability of juniors is still limited, and classical works are more difficult to understand, the texts selected are all high-evaluated modern masterpieces--that is, by means of poetry, essays, tales, and novels, to help the students to understand and appreciate the writers` technique of expression, the special characteristics of the works, and their backgrounds. If time allows, from the Middle Ages will be included, to enable the students to come into contact with classical works as well.
Grading: midterm 30%, final 30%, and class participation 40%.
(Note: Five points will be deducted from the final score for each absence from class without proper notification.)
